End of Year Trip!

 Ahipara Beach Fun!

Last Friday we set off in cars and a bus to have some end-of-year fun, as a reward for all our hard work this year! The four Junior classes went to Korora St Park for a play, ice-blocks and morning tea. Then we went to the beachfront to play in the sand and rockpools and have lunch.
Everyone had a great time, had loads of fun and were perfectly behaved! Thank you so much to all our whanau who came to transport, help out and supervise!

Hangin'10!

Sheltering from a shower.

Busy creative sand play!

This pool was chest-deep!

Crab hunting!

The deepest pool was up to our necks!

Thanks Rawiri, for the pack-up snacks!

Science in a Story

 Cooper the Ant!

Te Pihi read a great story called 'Grant the Ant.' We learnt a lot about an ant colony, the ants' tasks, and their life cycle.
Cooper wrote a great story and was our 'Writer of the Day!'
Then Cooper volunteered to act as an ant and show part of the the life cycle. Science is fun!

The queen lays the eggs.
When the larvae hatch out, they spin a cocoon around themselves.

Breaking out of the cocoon after four months! "How's that!?"

Now he is called a pupae. He wakes up so hungry!

Off goes Cooper the Ant to find food wherever he can.

Mm-mm... yummy ant food at the Seedling Cafe!!

Inquiry topic "From Garden to the Table"

We have been learning how to GERMINATE seeds in our classroom WITHOUT USING SOIL. First we pushed a seed into wet cotton wool. Then we put that into a small plastic bag. After one week, most of our bean seeds are already spouting. We will be watching them over the next few weeks and recording what we see. Soon we will be able to transplant them into our school garden where they will hopefully grow into larger bean plants. We can't wait!

Science in a Van

 Bubble Fun!

Everyone had so much fun at the recent bubble show.
We have learnt some scientific words by having fun!

A special mixture!

Will it separate?

Reaction!

The presenters were most impressed by all of our tamariki
and their advanced thinking skills!

Some of our best science questioners.

Watch out Jackson...

Woops! Bubble pop on head!

Thank you Emily and Alan for a great, interactive, fun show!

Metamorphosis!

 From Caterpillar to Butterfly!

Caterpillars eat lots and lots to grow big and strong.

We created role plays about one of our favourite books!

We created art to learn about the life cycle of a monarch caterpillar.

And an ant too!

One of our caterpillars made a chrysalis on the swan plant stem

But one of them made a run for it...

Higher and higher across our name banners...

...all the way up to the ceiling! We called him 'Roofie'

Then he curled up and hung there for a few weeks.

Until one day he morphed into a butterfly!
He dried and strengthened his wings.

Aria and Mermaid Barbie saved 'Roofie' after he flew down into the sink!
Then we let him fly free outside.

We are scientists, actors and artists!
