Inquiry topic "From Garden to the Table"

We have been learning how to GERMINATE seeds in our classroom WITHOUT USING SOIL. First we pushed a seed into wet cotton wool. Then we put that into a small plastic bag. After one week, most of our bean seeds are already spouting. We will be watching them over the next few weeks and recording what we see. Soon we will be able to transplant them into our school garden where they will hopefully grow into larger bean plants. We can't wait!

Amazing Maze Fun!

 The Gardener's Maze

We recently shared the big book 'The Gardener's Maze' and discussed what the gardener needed to make a maze out of hedge plants from scratch. We learnt how to make lists. We went hunting for new words.
Then we tried to create our own mazes from our maths equipment.
One of our reading groups read a story about a maze made out of maize in New Zealand.
Next we found some 3D mazes to try out and we are trying to beat our times and increase the level of difficulty with different mazes.
We are learning directions like: forwards, backwards, left, right, enter and exit.
We all think mazes are amazing!!

Planting Day at Lake Ngatu

One of our school values at Paparore School is "Community and Partnerships".

This morning we joined some community organisations like DOC, Bushlands Trust, Summit Forests and Ngai Takato for planting at Lake Ngatu. Some of our parents joined in as well. The adults dug the holes and the students planted the small trees. Then we got to have a barbecue lunch. It was lots of fun and we learnt how to work as a team.
