Science in a Story

 Cooper the Ant!

Te Pihi read a great story called 'Grant the Ant.' We learnt a lot about an ant colony, the ants' tasks, and their life cycle.
Cooper wrote a great story and was our 'Writer of the Day!'
Then Cooper volunteered to act as an ant and show part of the the life cycle. Science is fun!

The queen lays the eggs.
When the larvae hatch out, they spin a cocoon around themselves.

Breaking out of the cocoon after four months! "How's that!?"

Now he is called a pupae. He wakes up so hungry!

Off goes Cooper the Ant to find food wherever he can.

Mm-mm... yummy ant food at the Seedling Cafe!!

Tuakana/Teina Learning

 Learning from our tuakana

Ngai Takoto Whakatauki -  He iti marangai, tu ana te pahukahuka, He iti pioke no Rangaunu he au tona…

Small although the pioke may be, great is its wake, as it traverses the might of the Rangaunu harbour.

To help us learn the whakatauki (saying) of our local Ngai Takoto iwi, we asked our expert tuakana (older students) to teach us the words and actions.
Nga mihi Te Manga! You were wonderful teachers and now we know our whakatauki off by heart!!

TUAKANA/TEINA DAY!

Our Learning Day with Te Manga

We spent a day in the whare with an older class.
We learnt titi torea or stick games.

Some siblings chose to work together...

... and they worked happily with one another.

The big kids helped us illustrate our poems.

We illustrated the legend of 'Rona and the Moon'

We all loved our tuakana/teina day and have made some new friends!

Learning the titi torea and waiata for 'Rona'

Te Tiriti o Te Pihi

Te Pihi have been learning about The Treaty of Waitangi!

We read the Tree Hut Treaty and discussed problem solving, making agreements and promises.

Then we agreed on some promises for our class for this year, so that we can all work, learn and play happily.

Each person in our class signed our treaty, even the teachers.

When we signed we agreed to the treaty.

A treaty is a list of promises.

We are all happy with our treaty which is called Te Tiriti o Te Pihi
or Te Pihi's Treaty.
