ANZAC Day commemorations in Te Pihi 2024

"ANZAC" stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. ANZAC Day is to remember all the Australian and New Zealanders who gave their lives in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions around the world. It is also a time to remember and thank all those who have served and have continued to serve in the Australian and New Zealand armies.

We baked ANZAC biscuits today to remember the soldiers who served our country at war.

Billy is helping to add the ingredients into the bowl.

Millie is helping to mix all the ingredients together.

Frankie is rolling the biscuit mixture into a ball.

And here are our yummy biscuits all ready to eat.

We ate our yummy ANZAC biscuits at the flag pole.

Tuakana/Teina Learning

 Learning from our tuakana

Ngai Takoto Whakatauki -  He iti marangai, tu ana te pahukahuka, He iti pioke no Rangaunu he au tona… 

Small although the pioke may be, great is its wake, as it traverses the might of the Rangaunu harbour.

To help us learn the whakatauki (saying) of our local Ngai Takoto iwi, we asked our expert tuakana (older students) to teach us the words and actions.

Nga mihi Te Manga! You were wonderful teachers and now we know our whakatauki off by heart!!

High Tea Party for King Charles III Coronation

Te Pihi were invited to a high tea party for King Charles III Coronation! 

Mikayla read the invitation out to the class. 

So we talked about how we would prepare for our high tea party.....the food and drink we would have, the clothes we would wear and the decorations we needed to make.

We dressed up in our special dresses and collared shirts and wore our accessories (crowns, bow ties, gloves and pearl necklaces). We had to practise our Royal wave and how to sit nicely.

Michele turned the teachers' chair into a Royal throne chair and added some Royal accessories.

We ate cucumber and cheese sandwiches, sausage rolls, cupcakes, scones, lamingtons, meringues, fairy bread and kebabs.

Mrs Hammond and Michele were our waitresses. We drank iced tea out of really old tea cups and Mrs Dane let us use her really old English teapot. Rereata knew how to hold a tea cup like a Royal!

Mrs Hammond found some special English music to play on our Activ Board while we had our high tea party. We had so much fun and the food was really yummy!

ANZAC Day 2023

ANZAC Day is the day that people in New Zealand and Australia remember the soldiers who went to war. ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. In New Zealand we wear poppies. The red poppy is used as a symbol for remembering those who fought and died in World War One. In New Zealand we bake and eat Anzac biscuits. During World War 1, women from New Zealand and Australia used to send biscuits to the soldiers. We made Anzac biscuits and they were so yummy!

We measured out the ingredients and mixed it all together in a bowl.

Then we stirred it all together.

And last of all Mrs Hammond and Michele rolled the mixture into small balls. 

Then Mikayla helped to flatten the balls with a fork so they look more like biscuits.

Michele put the tray into the hot oven to bake. 

We had to wait about 10 minutes for them to cook. We were so excited to taste our biscuits!

Michele brought a very, very old German war helmet to school for us to look at and try on.

And we did some "Anzac Art" with Mrs Brydon.

Te Whare Kiwi's Assembly

 Our Dance Interpretation of our school pou.

We have been learning about our two school pou which are on the front of the main entrance to the office.

One is the East pou, one is the West pou. The pou were carved especially for Paparore School. Every item on the pou has some significance to our school and the local area.

Each class performed a dance about a different part of the pou. Our dances and costumes were cleverly designed by Miss Koland. We really enjoyed practicing our dances every week. Lots of whanau came to watch us and our assembly performances were outstanding!!

Te Kakano's dance was about the wheke from the Rangaunu Harbour, who turned into Puwheke Maunga.

Te Pihi's dance was about the godwit's annual migration to Alaska to breed.

Te Putake's dance was about the ancestor Tuwhakatere, and his son Hoka sneaking off to battle.
